Why is it hard for me to shade a really lightly with a pencil?

you need different leads, and not pressing down too hard. Practice by drawing pictures of photos, and focus on the shading in those photos. Shade lightly to dark, so as to prevent non-erasable mistakes. Just keep practicing, and take notice of how certain things are shaded in certain degrees of lighting.
