How to clean after your child?

My little boy is 5 years old and about to start kindergarten. I recently picked him up from day care only to find that he was covered in feces. The faculty told me they had no clue how it got there and I rushed him home and immediately washed it all off. A couple days later I walked into his room and he was sitting in the corner playing with his feces. He had it smeared on his face, on his shirt and all over the carpet. What are the best cleaning methods to get the feces off his shirt and the carpet?
